From the Owner’s Desk: Why Peer Support Changes Everything

"When I first struggled with addiction, I had no idea what a Peer Recovery Support Specialist was or that it could be a powerful tool in overcoming substance abuse. You hear about rehab, therapy, and 12-step sponsors, but peer coaching was nowhere on my radar. Back then, the PRSS certification wasn’t yet a staple in the behavioral health world. As an owner of SafeSide, I’ve made it my mission to change that—to bring more peer coaches into the workforce and do my part to find innovative approaches to addiction recovery.

What’s a Peer Support Specialist? They’re people who’ve walked through the fire of addiction and come out stronger on the other side. These coaches are passionate, trained, and certified to guide you through not only sobriety, but also the real-world barriers that often stand in the way of getting back on your feet—like mental health challenges, navigating the legal system, rebuilding your career, or securing stable housing.

Maybe this message resonates with you because you’re thinking about getting involved or becoming a coach, or maybe it’s because you’re struggling with addiction and need real, relatable support.

Whichever it is, our DMs are open. You don’t have to do this alone—a Peer Support Specialist can be your lifeline."
